Rivages

"Rivages" is the collection that first brought Antoine Gaussin’s work to international recognition. Moving between photography and charcoal, these images are less concerned with depicting a particular place than with evoking its presence. The landscape is stripped of everything unnecessary and reduced to its essential elements: water, light, horizon and a few vertical traces emerging from the sea.

The wooden posts rise from the water like fragments of an ancient language, or scattered notes upon a silent score. Each one introduces a rhythm, a pause, a variation. Their repetition creates an almost musical structure, while the surrounding water absorbs and transforms their presence.

Here, black and white is never simply black and white. It unfolds into an infinite spectrum of greys — subtle, atmospheric, almost weightless. The absence of colour does not diminish the landscape; it deepens it, allowing light, distance and atmosphere to become the true subjects of the image.

The sea erases the world, leaving only light, rhythm and memory.

The photographs seem suspended between representation and imagination, between a real geography and an inner landscape. From Asia to Venice, from Florida to Northern Europe, water becomes an almost universal horizon. The places may change, but the visual language remains: a shoreline without borders, a world without a precise geography.

There is something deeply contemplative in these images. The sea seems to erase the noise of the world, leaving only rhythm, light and matter. Rivages is not a place, it is a state of mind.
