Carrara

Carrara begins with a change of perception. In Misty Cathedral – the first image of the collection- , the marble mountain emerges through the mist like a vast architectural structure. It is no longer simply a quarry, but a monumental form shaped simultaneously by nature, human intervention and centuries of artistic history.

Carrara is inseparable from the great tradition of Italian sculpture and architecture. Its marble has been transformed by generations of artists into some of the most enduring forms of Western art. Gaussin approaches this material through Hyper-photography, bringing photography beyond the limits of immediate human vision.

Extreme definition becomes a way of seeing. Fractures, veins, geological layers and minute variations in the stone become visible. Surfaces reveal themselves with extraordinary precision, while the monumental scale of the mountain remains present.

Through Hyper-photography, the quarry becomes almost impossible to measure. The viewer loses the habitual sense of scale and enters a world where a fragment of stone can resemble an entire landscape, and an entire mountain can appear like a detail

Each image seems to contain countless images within itself. The marble becomes a landscape within the landscape and its geometry evokes architecture. Its veins resemble arteries and its fractures become scars.

The apparently inert begins to feel alive. This is where the work moves beyond documentary photography. Through Hyper-photography, the quarry becomes almost impossible to measure.
